The Crayfish Fly is one of the most productive flies you can use when fishing for large Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Largemouth Bass and Smallmouth Bass.
Crayfish are Crustaceans that are found around the world. There are 7 species found in Europe, over 100 species in Australia, and over 330 species found in North America. Crayfish are also found in South America, Mexico and Asia. Large Crayfish in Australia can grow to over 7 pounds and are considered to be tastier than Lobster. They inhabit freshwater streams, lakes, ponds, and swamps, but are most common to freshwater streams.
Large trout because of the energy expense it takes to feed on small flies will always choose a crayfish over flies. I have caught large trout on crayfish flies and the largest Brown Trout I ever saw caught was taken on a 4 inch brown Crayfish fly on the Beaverhead River in Montana. You can also catch 8 to 14 inch trout on smaller Crayfish Flies. Your Crayfish Fly needs to be weighted. The weight you use will depend on how fast the water is moving. Work your Crayfish Fly along the bottom fairly slowly around rocks or by undercut banks. You can usually fine Crayfish Flies tied in several colors but the only two that I would recommend are the brown Crayfish Fly and the Gray Crayfish Fly.
I have also caught more than my share of Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass on Crayfish Flies. The best time to use the Crayfish Fly for both Largemouth and Smallmouth bass is when the bass are feeding in shallow to fairly shallow water either early morning, late evening, at night, or on overcast days. Again work them slowly.
The next time you get out your fly rod to go fishing, be it for trout or bass, take along several sizes and colors of Crayfish Flies and you will not be disappointed. I hope this article helps you catch not only more fish but also better quality fish.
Tight lines, clear water and calm winds.
